actuation is analogous to the bending of a bimetallic strip when subjected to heating. Two metals having different coefficients of expansion make up the bimetallic strip, and, as heat is applied, the metals expand. The metal with a higher coefficient of thermal expansion will expand more, thus producing bend- ing. If a periodic heating source is used to heat the strip, then the strip undergoes heating and cooling, and the duration of the cycle is determined by the frequency of the heating source. In this work, experiments are con- ducted on metal-coated silicon beams clamped at both ends and with dimen- sions in the sub-micron range. An ampli- tude modulated laser source is used to actuate the resonant mode of the device. When the laser irradiates the resonator, light is absorbed, and the device heats up. The mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the metal and sili- con layers causes an out-of-plane bend- ing of the beam.
